Hush

(South)
I got a certan little girl she's on my mind
No doubt about it she looks so fine
She's the best girl that I ever had
Sometimes she's gonna make me feel so bad

Hush, hush
I thought I heard her calling my name now
Hush, hush
She broke my heart but I love her just the same now
Hush, hush
Thought I heard her calling my name now
Hush, hush
I need her loving and I'm not to blame now

(Love, love)
They got it early in the morning
(Love, love)
They got it late in the evening
(Love, love)
Well, I want that, need it
(Love, love)
Oh, I gotta gotta have it

She's got loving like quicksand
Only took one touch of her hand
To blow my mind and I'm in so deep
That I can't eat and I can't sleep

Listen
Hush, hush
Thought I heard her calling my name now
Hush, hush
She broke my heart but I love her just the same now
Hush, hush
Thought I heard her calling my name now
Hush, hush
I need her loving and I'm not to blame now

(Love, love)
They got it early in the morning
(Love, love)
They got it late in the evening
(Love, love)
Well, I want that, need it
(Love, love)
Oh, I gotta gotta have it

One More Rainy Day

(Lord/Evans)
Changes, visible changes
Sky looking so forlorn
It looks like the world's been born
On one more rainy day

Trying to see the sunlight
My heart's crying out loud
I try to see through the clouds
On one more rainy day

One more rainy day
Once again my mind is grey
This is what a rainy day can do
One more rainy day
One more rainy day

Sun starts shining on through
New day a day with you
It's strange what sun can do
On one more rainy day

One more rainy day
Once again my mind is grey
This is what a rainy day can do
One more rainy day
One more rainy day

b) I'm So Glad

(Elmore James)
I'm so glad
I'm so glad
I'm glad, I'm glad, I'm glad
I'm so glad
I'm so glad
I'm glad, I'm glad, I'm glad

Don't know what to do
Don't know what to do
Don't know what I'm gonna do
Another week in
Telephoning
Tired of groaning for you

I'm so glad
I'm so glad
I'm glad, I'm glad, I'm glad
I'm so glad
I'm so glad
I'm glad, I'm glad, I'm glad

Mandrake Root

(Blackmore/Evans/Lord)
I've got a Mandrake Root
It's some thunder in my brain
I feed it to my babe
She thunders just the same
Food of love sets her flame
Ah, stick it up

I've got the Mandrake Root
Baby's just the same
She still feels a quiver
She's still got the flame
She slows down, slows right down
I've got the power

Help

(Lennon/McCartney)
When I was younger, so much younger than today
I never needed anybody's help in any way
But now these days are gone I'm not so self assured
Now I find I've changed my mind, opened up the door

Help if you can I'm feeling down
But I do appreciate you being round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please help me

And now my life has changed in oh so many ways
My independence seems to vanish in the haze
But every now and then I feel so insecure
Now I know I need you like I've never done before

Help if you can I'm feeling down
But I do appreciate you being round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please help me

Help
I need somebody
Help
Not just anybody
Help
You know I need someone

Love Help Me

(Blackmore/Evans)
Vibrant flashes in my mind
Remind me of a foregone time
Blackened faces, broken romance
Blackened faces

My broken heart has bled
With memories of a love that's dead
Sometimes happy then sad
I need love, love help me

[Passing by the grounds of time]
Memories that are only mine
Looking for love, a brand new love
Looking for love

Dreams that are hard to see
Finding a new love for me
Someday she must come along
I need love, love help me

I need love to come home
Somewhere there must be one

Hoping someday for good news
Waiting for that girl to choose
Only hoping, all I can do
Only hoping

One day she must come along
A girl as pretty as a song
A woman just there for me
I need love, love help me

Vibrant flashes in my mind
Remind me of a foregone time
Blackened faces, broken romance
Blackened faces

My broken heart has bled
With memories of a love that's dead
Sometimes happy then sad
I need love, love help me
I need love, love help me
I need love, love help me

Hey Joe

(Roberts)
Hey Joe
Where you going with that gun in your hand
Hey Joe
Now tell me where you going with that gun in your hand
I'm gonna shoot my lady
Cos I caught her messing around with another man
Yes, I'm going down to shoot my lady
Cos I caught her messing around with another man

Hey Joe
I heard you shot your woman down
Hey Joe
I heard you shot your woman down
Right down to the ground
Yes I did I shot her
You know I shot her cos I caught her messing 'round town
Yes I did I shot her
I shot my woman cos she was messing 'round town
I gave her the gun - I shot her!

Hey Joe
Tell me where you gonna run to now?
Hey Joe
C'mon tell me where you gonna run to?
Don't you worry about me
I'm going way down South
Way down South where I'm gonna be free
I'm going way down South
Way down South maybe outside Mexico Way
I'm gonna run, oh yeah

Deep Purple Mk 1:
Rod Evans - vocals
Ritchie Blackmore - lead guitar
Jon Lord - organ
Nick Simper - bass guitar
Ian Paice - drums

Album notes:

Shades of Deep Purple

The combined talents of five young men are here extended to create realms of musical colour such as have never been heard before on record in Shades of Deep Purple.

There is JON LORD; Jon is tall, slim and some might say sinister until they hear the sweetness and light he paints with his electronic palette. To others he is 'The Walrus.' ROD EVANS is their mouthpiece on this disc and it's in his nature to be the romantic member of the team. NICKY SIMPER is a London native who also plays the bass guitar; he is the joker in the pack who fondly trails a dog by the name of 'Loppy Lips'. On drums the man is IAN PAICE whose sticks explode upon the skins with sounds that belie his gentle looks. The lead guitar is played by RITCHIE BLACKMORE who speaks to most through his wild strings as if to say the instrument is more eloquent than I.

Having met the group, explore the depths of their creations now by turning on your music player, adjust its volume to peak and then settle down between the speakers to enjoy the softest whisper of their souls AND THE ADDRESS which explodes into a wall of noise before losing you in a vast purple sea of sound. A distant animal howls, only to be silenced by some organ chords. HUSH cries the choir for Rod is about to sing and having sung Jon's organ plays its part and the excitement mounts, hush sing the choir and peace is born. A crash of thunder bursts upon the scene and ONE MORE RAINY DAY has arrived. Stay with it though for on the heels of the rain must come the sun and when it does HAPPINESS and prelude to the final song I'M SO GLAD.

Side two moves off with MANDRAKE ROOT full of promise and amorous intent. From outer space comes a plaintive cry; it echoes off the Himalayas and finds its resting place at home. HELP it says, but in McCartney's words no help is found. I need love, LOVE HELP ME is the call and the mood of optimism is aroused by the boys, come let's find love, a new love, love there'll be, somewhere there must be one.

South perhaps the search will end. HEY JOE where are you going with that gun in your hand? But Joe's tale is one of woe and he must go south in search of peace, to Mexico perhaps - somewhere lies the answer.

SHADES OF DEEP PURPLE was recorded in about 18 hours between May 11 and May 13 1968, just a few months after the group had formed. The band was a combination of the groups ROUNDABOUT (featuring Blackmore, Lord and Simper) and THE MAZE (featuring Evans and Paice). Blackmore, Lord and Simper had been in the music business for years, Evans and Paice for not quite as long, but none of them had ever tasted major success before the release of the album.

The album was released in September and made 24, while the single off it, Hush, made 4. Most of the initial set list was taken off this album together with other covers. Of these songs, Hush and Mandrake Root were the most popular; Hush being re-recorded in 1988, and Mandrake Root clocking in at an unbelievable time of 28:42 on a live album.

Comments: These sleeve notes are slightly incorrect. Roundabout was the original name of Deep Purple. Indeed they were billed as Roundabout on their live debut dates in Denmark, April 1968. And the lineup was the same as on this album.
